£5 million of funding has come from Yorkshire Cancer Research to look at taking mobile scanning vans to community centres around Leeds, to try and detect lung cancer at a much earlier stage.

Patients with screen detected lung cancer have 10 year survival rates of 80%, versus current 5 year survival rates of 9.8% for lung cancers detected in England.

The work will be led by Dr Matthew Callister, Consultant Respiratory Physician, Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Irene Simmonds, the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial Project Manager, Leeds University.

The team would like to identify:

Patients or carers to review publicity materials and come together for a one-off meeting in Leeds between 18-27 October. Transport costs and refreshments will be provided.

One or two patients or carers who have had experience of lung cancer or another lung condition to be involved in a Trial Steering Committee which will oversee the study. This committee is expected to meet quarterly, and involvement can be in person or by teleconference facilities.
